The single most useful thing a pram can do in the first year is take the car seat. A baby who falls asleep on the drive stays asleep through the car park, the shops and the coffee, because the seat comes with them. This is what people mean by a travel system, and it is less complicated than the word makes it sound. Here is how the pieces fit, and which pram takes which capsule.

How a travel system works

Three parts. The capsule is a rear-facing infant car seat with a carry handle, suitable from birth. The base is installed in the car once, with the seatbelt or ISOFIX, and stays there; the capsule clicks in and out of it in a second. The pram has attachment points on the frame that the capsule, or an adapter, clicks into.

The daily routine: baby into the capsule at home, capsule onto the base in the car, drive, capsule off the base, capsule onto the pram, and the baby has not been unbuckled once. It is the reason parents of newborns describe the capsule as the best money they spent.

The Mesa, and what it fits

The Mesa is UPPAbaby's own capsule. It is suitable from birth (2.0 kg) to 15 kg, roughly birth to twelve months, low birthweight tested, and CASA approved for aircraft use. The carrier weighs 4.7 kg, which matters, because you will carry it by the handle with a sleeping baby inside.

Third-party means Maxi-Cosi, Nuna, Joie and BeSafe capsules on the supported list, on the frames that take them. No other brand fits a Minu V3 or Minu Duo. Capsule ranges change often, so check the specific model on the adapter finder before you buy the adapter.

On a Vista carrying two children, position matters as well as product. The top position takes a capsule directly; the lower position needs the lower adapters; and carrying two capsules at once needs the upper pair as well. The adapter finder walks through each configuration.

Capsule, bassinet, or both?

A capsule is a car seat. It holds the baby semi-reclined, which is right for a car and fine for a trip through the shops, but it is not a bed. For long walks and proper naps a newborn should lie flat, in a bassinet or a seat that reclines fully.

So the honest answer for a family with a car is both, and the good news is that on a Vista the bassinet is already in the box. The pattern most parents settle into: capsule for days built around the car, bassinet for days built around walking. On a Cruz, Minu or Kona the seat lies flat from birth as sold, so the bassinet becomes optional and the capsule does the car days.

If you are on foot or on public transport most of the time, you may not need a capsule at all. A bassinet or lie-flat seat, and a convertible car seat installed in the car for the rides you do take, is the simpler set-up.

Choosing the pram side of the system

The capsule, the base, the adapters and the prams that take them are together in pram and capsule travel systems.

• Car every day, one child: Cruz V3 with a Mesa. Direct click, no adapters to lose, and the seat lies flat once the capsule stage is over.
• Car every day, more children coming: Vista V3 with a Mesa. Later, a second capsule or a RumbleSeat for the sibling.
• Small car, lots of travel: Minu V3 with a Mesa and the Minu adapter. The lightest combination in the range.
• Twins: Minu Duo with one Mesa on the parent's left and the Minu Duo adapter. The second twin rides in the seat, which lies flat from birth.

On a Minu V3, the Mesa is the only capsule that fits, and it goes on with the Minu adapter. Whichever pram, install the base in the car properly. Most capsule fitting problems are base problems, and a professional fitter, or the fitting guide in the box, takes twenty minutes.

Safety, briefly

A capsule is only safe on a pram when it is clicked in, both sides, and you hear it. Check it every time. Keep capsule time short and take the baby out for breaks on long trips, the same as you would in the car.
